When Wisdom Teeth Extraction is Recommended

Wisdom teeth extraction is typically recommended if:

Wisdom teeth are impacted: When there isn’t enough space for the teeth to emerge properly, they can become trapped beneath the gum line or grow at an angle.
Teeth are causing crowding: If your wisdom teeth push against existing teeth, they can cause misalignment or damage.
You experience pain, swelling, or infection: Infections or cysts can develop around impacted wisdom teeth, leading to swelling and discomfort.
Teeth are partially erupted: If the tooth has broken through the gums only partially, bacteria can enter the area, leading to infection or gum disease.

We will evaluate your case through thorough exams and X-rays to determine whether extraction is necessary and provide you with a customized treatment plan.

Process of Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth extraction is generally performed in the following steps:

Initial Consultation

During your consultation, we will review your dental and medical history, take X-rays, and determine if extraction is necessary.

Anesthesia Options

Depending on the complexity of the procedure, we offer local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia to ensure you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the extraction.

Extraction Procedure

The dentist will gently remove the wisdom teeth. If the teeth are impacted or not fully erupted, the gum tissue may need to be cut to access the tooth. For more complicated cases, the teeth may be removed in sections.

Post-Procedure Care

After the extraction, we’ll clean the area and may place sutures to promote healing. After the procedure, we’ll provide you with detailed aftercare instructions.

Recovery

After the extraction, you’ll need to rest and follow the aftercare guidelines to ensure proper healing

The procedure is generally quick, and with modern anesthesia options, most patients report only mild discomfort during and after the extraction.

Caring for Your Mouth After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Proper care after wisdom teeth extraction is essential for a smooth recovery. Here are some tips to ensure healing and minimize discomfort:

Rest and Recovery: Get plenty of rest following the extraction to help your body heal. Avoid physical activity for at least 24-48 hours after the procedure.
Bite on Gauze: You will likely be given gauze to bite down on to control bleeding. Change the gauze as needed to keep the extraction site clean.
Apply Ice: Apply an ice pack to your face in 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling and manage discomfort.
Avoid Rinsing or Spitting: For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously or spitting, as this can dislodge the blood clot and affect healing.
Eat Soft Foods: Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup during the first few days after the procedure. Avoid hot or spicy foods, and chew away from the extraction site.
Take Medications: Follow any prescribed pain relief instructions and take over-the-counter pain medication as directed to minimize discomfort.
Keep the Area Clean: Gently brush your teeth, avoiding the extraction site. After 24 hours, rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution to keep the area clean and prevent infection.
Avoid Smoking: Smoking can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications like dry socket, so it’s best to avoid smoking for at least 48 hours after the extraction.

We’ll schedule a follow-up visit to ensure the area is healing properly and address any concerns you may have.

Preventing Infection After Wisdom Teeth Removal

After your wisdom teeth extraction, preventing infection is essential for a smooth recovery. To minimize the risk, be sure to follow the aftercare instructions carefully, including gentle rinsing with saltwater after 24 hours. Avoid using straws, smoking, or disturbing the extraction site to ensure the blood clot remains intact. Keeping the area clean and taking any prescribed antibiotics will further help prevent infection and promote proper healing.
