Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction in Irving, TX

While our focus at Dental Artistry is on preventative care, we perform tooth extractions on a regular basis. We are always looking for ways to avoid an extraction by keeping your oral health in good shape. We will clean your teeth on a regular basis, discuss a healthy diet with you, and treat gum disease, cavities, and infections to the best of our abilities; in order to keep your teeth healthy and intact. As a general dentist, we will also work to restore your tooth if it has been damaged – all of which can help you to maintain your natural teeth for years to come. If you are experiencing discomfort or your tooth is in need of repair, we invite you to call our dental office at (469) 706-9355 to schedule an appointment. During your examination, we will let you know if your tooth can be saved or if a tooth extraction is the best option for preventing the spread of infection and eliminating your discomfort. In our dentist office, we will take the steps necessary to ensure your comfort so that regardless of which treatment option you select, you will feel relaxed during the process.

Process - Tooth Extraction in Irving, TX

The process of having a tooth extraction

When it comes to tooth extraction, there are several ways that we can go about the procedure. Here's how we ensure a smooth experience:

  • Numbing the Area: Before any extraction, we will administer local anesthesia to ensure you feel no pain during the process. Though you may feel pressure, you'll remain relaxed and comfortable throughout.
  • Extraction of Matured Teeth: For teeth that have fully matured and erupted, we can use dental tools to gently wiggle and extract them from the socket. Once removed, the area is cleaned thoroughly, and gauze is applied to control bleeding.
  • Impacted or Submerged Teeth: In cases where the tooth is impacted or submerged, typically seen with wisdom teeth, oral surgery may be necessary. This involves creating an incision in the gums to access the tooth. The gum flap is lifted, and if needed, surrounding bone or tissue is removed to access the tooth.
  • Challenging Extractions: Stubborn teeth may require additional measures. If the tooth doesn't budge easily, we might need to break into smaller pieces for removal. Once the tooth is out, the area is cleaned, the gum flap is placed back and sutured, and gauze is used to control bleeding.

Each step is meticulously executed to ensure optimal results and minimal discomfort for our valued patients throughout the entire tooth extraction procedure.

How to care for your mouth after a tooth extraction

At Dental Artistry, we perform a tooth extraction in the least invasive manner possible to shorten the recovery time. Here's a breakdown of our approach to post-extraction care:

Initial Recovery in Office: Patients typically spend about an hour in our office post-extraction where we monitor bleeding, and ensure anesthesia wears off safely. We strongly advise arranging for someone to pick you up after the procedure for added support.
Home Recovery Tips: Rest is paramount for a swift recovery. We advise patients to take a nap post-extraction and drink plenty of water. Avoid extreme temperatures in drinks to prevent sensitivity. Initially, refrain from using a straw, as suction can trigger bleeding.
Swelling Management: Swelling is common but usually subsides within a few days. We recommend using Ibuprofen as directed to help reduce swelling. Additionally, applying ice packs or cold compresses for 15-minute intervals can help alleviate swelling.
Nutritious Diet: Opt for soft, nutrient-rich foods like smoothies with vegetables, fruits, yogurt, and protein powder. Gradually reintroduce firmer foods starting with soft options like noodles.
Oral Hygiene: While maintaining oral hygiene is crucial, it's essential to avoid brushing directly over the surgical site initially. Rinsing with water and baking soda or using an antibacterial mouthwash can help prevent infections.
Follow-Up Appointment: We may recommend a follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing and address any concerns.

We ensure our patients understand every aspect of their recovery journey, providing thorough guidance for optimal healing and comfort!

Signs that you might need a tooth extraction

At Dental Artistry, we want you to visit our dentist office at the first sign of discomfort. If you have a slight toothache or irritation in your gums, you can schedule a dental exam. If there is a problem, we can correct it immediately, rather than allowing it to grow and spread. In many cases, we can help you to avoid experiencing any significant discomfort by simply removing the decayed area while it is still small. Otherwise, you may find yourself with a dental emergency as an untreated cavity spreads. Fortunately, we make it easy to schedule a dental checkup with our Irving dentist office. All you need to do is call (469) 656-4025 to schedule an appointment. We will work within your schedule to ensure that you receive the care you need, when you need it.

If you still have your wisdom teeth, you may need to have them removed. We invite you to schedule an appointment with our dentist office so that we can examine your teeth and take X-rays to determine whether or not you should keep your wisdom teeth. Not everyone needs to have them out, so it depends on how much room you have and whether they are growing in straight or impacted. Also, if you have worn braces, they might need to be removed to prevent them pushing the other teeth forward. The process of removing wisdom teeth is roughly the same as any other tooth with the exception of when and why we perform the procedure. At Dental Artistry, we typically recommend wisdom teeth removal in the teenage years. General extractions are more common as people age and have a tooth that needs to be removed due to a severe infection or significant damage. To find out whether or not you should keep your wisdom teeth, call (469) 706-9355 to schedule an appointment to speak with Dr. Sri.
